The big lift: the nacelle of the largest offshore turbine has now been installed

Developing wind technology is not just what we do, it is part of who we are. Built on sound technology, the first prototype of the SG 14-236 DD – the newest member to the Siemens Gamesa offshore wind turbine family – is now being installed at the Danish national test center for large wind turbines in Osterild.

SG 14-236 DD series: The journey of an offshore prototype
In the first episode of the series we followed the nacelle on its way to the test site.
In the second episode of the series we interviewed Sandra Them, technical product manager for the SG 14-236 DD, during the installation of the last tower section.

In the third episode of the series the nacelle has been installed and placed on top of the tower, a major exercise referred to as ‘the big lift’.

In this fourth episode of the series the blades have left the Aalborg´s factory and are on their way to the test site.
In this fifth episode of the series the prototype wind turbine is fully installed.
In this sixth episode of the series the SG 14-236 DD prototype has produced its first power.
The journey began when the nacelle left the factory and the tower was installed on site, ready to receive the components. Activity at the Danish test center at Osterild does not stop, and the installation of Siemens Gamesa’s largest offshore wind turbine has now surpassed a key milestone: the nacelle has been placed on top of the tower, a major exercise referred to as ‘the big lift’.

In this article Morten Moeller Hansen, installation expert, shares his view on the project. His team is responsible for everything that evolves around building the prototype: the foundation, transport of the components, cranes, installation, and commissioning.

“When the prototype is built, we in the construction team are able to, for the first time, validate our design, our equipment and our methods. Then, we take care of the big puzzle of organizing all parties, all components, and all sub-contractors, and making sure everything is ready and completed when needed on site”, has explained Morten.

What does it mean for you that the nacelle has been lifted and the prototype is now ready for installation?
Lifting operations are always a tricky and stressful matter; often subject to change due to external factors, so when all main components are finally safely lifted and installed, I believe we all take a relieving deep breath – at least I do. It’s for very good reasons a milestone that is often cause for celebration within the project team!  

I often think of that when facing difficult challenges: it is not the issue itself, but the way we are able solve it, that matters to me. To make decisions and find solutions on the spot is only possible when being surrounded by such experienced colleagues as we have.

Once we have the prototype erected, it will be a great milestone for the project. It is at this point that the product is materializing in full. It is the first time all modules are joined together; the tower, the nacelle and the blades.

A few words on the future?    
It is evident that wind power is a big part of the energy transition we are currently facing, and that Siemens Gamesa is a major player, if not the major player, within offshore wind.

Being part of this rapidly evolving industry, and being with the frontrunner of the industry, is so cool. I’m really proud to be part of this project and to launch our SG 14-236 DD. This will for sure be a key to unlock the potential of offshore wind.
