WindEurope Offshore 2019: Siemens Gamesa leads the way

1.5 GW conditional order among highlights

Vejle / 29 November 2019

Siemens Gamesa lead the way at the WindEurope Offshore 2019 Conference & Exhibition in Copenhagen, Denmark. In the country where offshore wind was born, SGRE demonstrated once again why it is the offshore market leader on several fronts. From the signing of an approximately 1.5 GW conditional order from Vattenfall to the launch of the uprated SG 11.0-193 DD offshore wind turbine to several key panel discussions, the company lead the way as industry leaders gathered for three days.

From Tuesday, November 26 to Thursday, November 28, 2019, the eyes of the Offshore wind industry were clearly focused on Copenhagen. At the bi-annual event, around 9,000 visitors joined Siemens Gamesa experts to learn, share, and discuss crucial aspects of the offshore wind world.

But already one day prior, namely on Monday, November 25, SGRE announced that it was now able to actively dictate wind flow at offshore wind locations with the launch of its new Wake Adapt feature. A software-based solution, it can determine direction of wind reaching downstream turbines, providing up to a 1% increase in annual energy production on offshore wind power plant level. By reducing the detrimental wake effect by up to 10%, the feature means greater value for customers, ratepayers, and society. Customized to site conditions, Wake Adapt can potentially be retrofit on existing Siemens Gamesa gearless Direct Drive and geared G4 offshore wind turbines.

Tuesday, November 26 had a strong focus on thought-leadership from SGRE: Offshore CEO Andreas Nauen, Offshore CTO Morten Pilgaard Rasmussen, Offshore Chief Procurement Officer Albert Dominko, and Offshore Senior VP of Human Resources Catharina Haardt all expounded on the strategic plans and concrete activities taking place in the world’s leading offshore wind turbine manufacturer. A dash of royalty also made the news with H.R.H. Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark visiting the Siemens Gamesa booth for an introduction to the work being done to promote the technology developed internationally to combat climate change and diversity amongst the company’s employees.

Launching the SG 11.0-193 DD Flex offshore wind turbine – now with the ability to reach a capacity of 11 MW under specific conditions – shot straight to the top of numerous news media from across the globe. It was furthermore a most satisfied Offshore CEO Andreas Nauen, who together with vital Siemens Gamesa sales team members, could announce the signing of the conditional order for the approximately 1.5 GW Hollandse Kust Zuid (HKZ) contract with Vattenfall. Consisting of the two HKZ 1+2 and HKZ 3+4 projects, each with a capacity of 760 MW, the single conditional contract will employ approximately 140 units of the uprated 11 MW machine released only one day prior.

The next major European wind industry trade fair will take place from September 22 – 25, 2020, when the Wind Energy Hamburg 2020 exhibition and WindEurope 2020 conference combine into the Global Wind Summit 2020 in Hamburg, Germany. The next WindEurope Offshore Conference & Exhibition will take place from April 27 – 29, 2021 in Copenhagen.
