Servicing, troubleshooting, and retrofitting turbines can involve tight spaces, heavy equipment, and physically demanding tasks, often with the welcome wind adding unwelcome complications. In Andrey's words: "Can be oily, can be dangerous, can be complex, can be physically hard. It's not a job for people looking for routine."

Safety first

"Sometimes simply by looking outside of the window you can see all the hazards," Andrey says. Harapaki's terrain is steep and hilly, and the weather can change through all four seasons within an hour. Before any tool comes out of the bag, there's a plan to walk through and conditions to check. Only then does the work begin.

And when the work in the turbine does begin, safety comes first. That's why the team is in constant communication. Andrey says, "You communicate with your teammates, so every time in a turbine, you have visual contact, you have verbal contact. You have to know where your mate is, it's not safe to be alone in a turbine."

What makes it manageable, he says, is a positive mindset — and having a great team supporting him. New turbines especially demand close attention early on before they settle into a steady rhythm. "Being patient and close to the details made our job far easier," he explains.

Ask Andrey what keeps him motivated, and the answer is clear: He loves what wind energy represents. "I enjoy the feeling of cracking the code with endless sources of energy," he says. "Wind is blowing, turbines are generating. Nothing but wind."

Measurable impact

The 41 turbines at Harapaki generate enough clean electricity to power roughly 70,000 homes across Hawke's Bay — a number Andrey is proud of but doesn't claim credit for alone. "I don't want to be seen as a Superman who saves Hawke's Bay from day to day," he says. Instead, he points out that 2,400 people worked on the Harapaki project to make it a reality.

That mix of pride and humility carries over into his family life, too. When his kids spot the turbines from the car and start giggling with excitement, something in him lights up. "Of course, I'm proud inside, but I usually play cool outside," he laughs. "Good example for kids to be humble."

Why service matters

For Andrey, the purpose of his work as a service technician is obvious. "If there is power, there is a warm house, a quickly cooked meal, all chores are done," he says. "This gives a lot of comfort to everyone."
