From prototype to platform readiness: laying the foundation for industrial scale

Every industrial journey begins with a prototype and for Siemens Gamesa’s 14 MW and 15 MW turbines that first step took place at the national test center in Østerild, Denmark, where the pioneering SG 14-222 prototype was installed.

For Sandra Svan Them, Technical Product Manager for the platform, the mission from day one was clear:

“When the first prototype was installed and spinning,” she recalls, “you could feel how many people, across so many teams, had contributed to making it possible. It was the moment when the vision became real.”

As the platform moved from concept to reality, the focus naturally shifted from vision to verification. Safety and precision guided every early design decision. Lessons from the prototype phase fed directly into the development of industrialized platform designs and production-ready solutions, translating engineering concepts into factory-ready components and processes.

The bridge from prototype to industrial readiness was strengthened by colleagues such as Morten Møller Hansen, who led the prototype installation at the Østerild test site.

During the prototype phase, the installation teams validated major innovations, including the Electrical Horizontal Single Blade Mounting (EHSBM) system, a leap forward in speed, safety, and technician-friendly operation.

Industrializing at scale: factory readiness and global ramp-up

Siemens Gamesa’s factories in Cuxhaven, Germany and Taichung, Taiwan have become the engines of global industrialization. According to Steffen Frydendal Poulsen, responsible for the company's Research & Development activities, the long lifecycle of the platform brings major advantages.

Factory ramp-up is a structured journey: introducing new equipment, defining takt times — the required assembly duration needed to match production demand, and collaborating closely with suppliers to reach stable, high-quality series production. Over time, as turbines are assembled at scale, consistency and repeatability strengthen manufacturing stability, lowering costs and increasing reliability.

Turning a prototype into a platform capable of delivering hundreds of turbines per year to global markets is a transformation that goes far beyond engineering. It requires factory readiness, process standardization, and a deeply collaborative approach across the value chain.

Scaling sustainability from pilot to impact

For Jonas Pagh Jensen, who leads sustainable features like RecyclableBlade and GreenerTower, scaling is where sustainability becomes truly impactful.

“When we began, we had only three RecyclableBlades,” he says. “Now we’ve produced more than 300, installed them at projects like Sofia in the UK, and are scaling RecyclableBlade and GreenerTower into large commercial projects such as Thor in Denmark.” 

Execution Excellence: delivering safe and cost-effective offshore energy

The 14/15 MW turbines have now proven themselves at large scale across Europe, Asia, and the U.S., a key reason why customers continue to choose them for the next decade of offshore development.

For Steef Grundtvig Strijbos, Senior Construction Project Manager at Moray West —the first offshore wind farm to use the SG 14-222, with a total installed capacity of 882MW— the advancements since prototype phase are unmistakable.

Strong collaboration across functions from engineering, construction, service to logistics is a key enabler of the platform’s performance. Close interaction between chief engineers and on-site teams before and during execution ensures that every detail is understood and optimized.

This strong execution culture enables seamless handovers to service, an essential piece of the customer value chain. Even as retrofit tasks arise with the introduction of new products, they are managed transparently, with clear hours, responsibilities and cost assessments.

For Bodil Finnerup, Head of Product Integrity, the true power of the platform lies in its combination of high volume, mature design, and data-driven reliability. 

Incremental upgrades from the SG 14-222 to the SG 14-236, and now to the SG 15-236, follow strict validation criteria and reliability thresholds. Each enhancement builds on proven technology, minimizing risk while maximizing performance.

“I’m excited about a future built on a consistent, technology-proven offshore portfolio,” Bodil says. “It creates a ripple effect of benefits across installation, manufacturing, execution, serviceability and reliability.”
