India new forest will capture 110,000 kilos of CO2 per year

Since its birth around two years ago, the Forests of Siemens Gamesa – one of the company’s flagship projects when it comes to sustainability and climate protection – has grown to an impressive 100,000 trees around the globe. Siemens Gamesa colleagues in India took it upon themselves to grow it even further with the planting of 5,000 new saplings.

Creating a cleaner, greener, and better world is part of the Siemens Gamesa DNA. Not just by manufacturing products that do not emit CO2, but also by engaging in projects that aim to otherwise reduce the world’s CO2 levels. Planting trees is among the most effective methods – in fact, each mature tree captures 22 kilos of CO2 annually – and the trees planted through the company’s Social Commitment department’s Forests of Siemens Gamesa have so far captured more than 1.79 tons of CO2.

This Sunday 120 Siemens Gamesa colleagues along with their families volunteered to create their own little urban man-made forest by planting 5,000 saplings near the company’s main location in India. Together with NGO partner Round Table India Trust, who organized this event, they thereby contributed to both UN Sustainable Development Goals 13 and 15 – Climate Change and Life on Land – by creating our forests.

“It is wonderful to work with our families for a greener cause which goes along with what our company stands for,” said Navin Dewaji, Siemens Gamesa Onshore CEO in India.

It was with great enthusiasm that the volunteers got to work, and with a strong belief that in the years to come their efforts will grow into a beautiful micro-forest. The connection with the nature and the soil resulted in heightened emotions and a huge sense of fulfilment for what was achieved – everyone smiled, everyone felt they accomplished something wonderful.

“It for sure was a re-energizing moment for all of us as we planted trees and created a positive energy around us in India,” added Jan Willem, Siemens Gamesa Service CEO in India. 

Young and old both enjoyed in equal measure doing their part in creating a greener world. It was a beautiful sight especially to see all the children excitedly planting trees, adding manure, and listening intently to how they can contribute to our environment.

The tiny steps taken today will go a long way in making this planet a better place for the generations to come. In the words of one of the participating children: “I just added some oxygen. I am a superhero!”
