A little can go a long way: how we can all become climate advocates

Madrid / 21 October 2021

Climate change is the biggest crisis facing our generation. It poses the most substantial threat to our global security and well-being and is causing the extinction of some species and an increase in natural disasters worldwide. Today, on World Energy Conservation Day, it is essential to reflect on our energy usage. While companies need to make effective plans to minimise their energy inefficiencies and decarbonise their supply chains, our individual efforts can also be hugely influential in the battle for a greener climate.

Each and every one of us can make an impact in the fight for a better world. As consumers, customers, and citizens we all have the ability to influence change and do our part for energy conservation – both at work and in our personal lives. Our diet, lifestyle, and consumerism habits are all essential factors that contribute to our personal energy usage. Trying to be greener might seem like an overwhelming task in our already busy schedules, but a few minor changes in our daily lives can go a long way.

10 simple changes you can implement today:
  • Switching off - make sure your lights and electrical appliances are off when you leave the house or when you are not using them. Most appliances still use energy even if they aren´t switched on! Make sure you switch off the sockets or unplug them.
  • Be food-aware – the amount and kind of food you consume can be detrimental to the environment. It is good to be aware of the impact your food choices have!
  • Buy less clothes or opt for second hand – fast fashion is not our planets friend.
  • Hang-dry your washing – it is more environmentally friendly than using a clothes dryer.
  • Use less water - try to cut down the amount of time spent in the shower and use less water when washing up. Making small changes like turning off the tap while you are brushing your teeth can be very beneficial
  • Only use heating when it is essential - the winter months are in-bound, but it is important to be aware of our heating habits and try to eliminate unnecessary use. Make sure your home is well-insulated.
  • Keep a tab on your energy - track your usage by opting for a smart meter, or some form of energy tracker, as well as timers for your lights.
  • Pay attention to your products – educating yourself about the background of the products you consume and consider which energy products you buy. Look for Energy-star certified models and trade incandescent bults for energy-efficient LEDs which could save up to 75% more energy!
  • Make a commitment to travelling more sustainably –where you can, cycle, walk, or take public transport rather than driving. If you do choose to have a car, perhaps consider hybrid and electric options.
  • Fly less – opt for other forms of international travel or plan a staycation instead!

Talking about these changes with friends and family can also open the conversation and inspire others to do the same!

How is Siemens Gamesa contributing?

At Siemens Gamesa, we are aware that there is always more to be done. Through new innovative projects and ideas, we are always implementing new ideas that can help make us a little greener. We are continuously working to identify ways to save energy, and we often document these projects via action plans for each of Siemens Gamesa’s locations. Our energy usage is tracked on a monthly basis through an energy tracking service that helps us become as environmentally friendly as possible.

In FY21, Siemens Gamesa started 45 energy-saving related projects, focussed on: lighting (exchanging lamps to LED or installing lighting management systems), ventilation / air-conditioning optimization, optimization of manufacturing processes to reduce the time needed for higher energy using sub processes e.g. blade casting, and replacing diesel trucks and forklifts with electric alternatives.

Learning to conserve energy in these small ways can make a huge difference. It will not only cut down your household bills, but it could have an amazing impact on the natural world. If we put a few of these small changes into effect, we can all make an active difference to the community and the globe. We can all play a part in the green transition and become climate heroes today! What do you plan to do today to save energy?
